    Bus line trajectories classification using weightless neural networks

    Geo-enabled devices are ubiquitous nowadays. Within a diversity of possible applications using the huge of amount data generated by this technology, our work focuses on a chronic problem of Rio de Janeiro city: its public bus system. This text presents a framework for GPS trajectories classification, whose focus is the identification of bus routes of a public bus system. In order to do that, it was used the lightweight and versatile WiSARD, a weightless neural network classifier. Different binarization methods were used to adapt raw data to WiSARD’s binary input, making use of a set of rules defined by the application domain. Yet, it is evaluated a way of combining WiSARD through decision directed acyclic graphs. All these approachs result in different flavors of a neuro-symbolic learning system. The framework was tested against a vast data set created from open access and real-time data acquired from the current bus system of Rio de Janeiro city. Results obtained suggest the applicability of the proposed solution in a classification problem with more than 500 classes. Comparisons made also indicate an equivalent performance of WiSARD and other state-of-art and widely used machine learning methods. In addition, the framework described here is believed to be adaptable to other application domains.Dispositivos com localização espacial estão em toda parte hoje em dia. Dentre várias possíveis aplicações com a grande quantidade de dados gerada por esse tipo de equipamento, nosso trabalho foca em um problema crônico da cidade do Rio de Janeiro: seu sistema público de ônibus. Apresenta-se neste texto uma arquitetura para classificação de trajetórias GPS, cujo foco é a identificação de rotas de ônibus do sistema público. Para isso, utilizamos o leve e versátil classificador baseado em redes neurais sem peso WiSARD. Para a geração da entrada da rede, experimentamos diferentes formas de binarização, fazendo uso de regras definidas pelo problema. Ainda, avaliamos uma forma de combinação das redes WiSARD com o uso de um grafo acíclico de decisões. Todas essas propostas resultam em diferentes sabores de um sistema de aprendizado neurossimbólico. Tal arquitetura foi testada contra um vasto conjunto de dados construído a partir de dados fornecido em tempo real e de forma pública pelo sistema corrente da cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Os resultados obtidos indicam a aplicabilidade da solução proposta em um problema de classificação envolvendo mais de 500 classes. As comparações efetuadas indicam uma equiparação do modelo WiSARD com outros modelos em estado da arte. No mais, acreditamos que a metodologia aqui descrita possa ser utilizada com sucesso em outros domínios

    Natural Coinfection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli in a feral pigeon (Columba livia)

    Background: Rock pigeon (Columba livia) is an exotic and invasive species of the Columbidae family found in several cities around the world, including Brazilian cities, and close to humans. This species is found in large populations often in public locations, where people may have contact. Several studies have demonstrated the isolation of human pathogens from these birds. However, there are scarce studies describing infections by Gram-negative bacteria to which pigeons are susceptible. Therefore, this report aimed to describe a case of natural coinfection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli in a feral pigeon.Case: A sick feral pigeon was delivered at the Laboratory of Ornithological Studies, State University of Ceará, Fortaleza, Brazil. Due to poor prognosis, the individual was euthanized with ketamine via intravenous injection and submitted to necropsy, in which samples were collected for microbiological and histopathological procedure. The procedure was performed aseptically and samples were collected from intestine, liver, spleen, heart and lung. Bacterial isolation was performed with culture media selective for Gram negative bacteria and strains were identified biochemically. Histopathological examination was performed with conventional method and slides were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. DNA from E. coli isolates was extracted with simples boiling method and submitted to uniplex conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to diagnose diarrheagenic pathotypes with specific primers for the following genes: aaiC, aatA, eaeA, stx1, stx2, eltB, estA and ipaH. Escherichia coli was isolated from the intestine, liver, spleen and lung, while Pseudomonas aeruginosa was present in liver, spleen and lung. E. coli strains from liver and spleen were positive for the aaiC gene, which is a diagnostic gene for Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) pathotype. Necropsy revealed the presence of several caseous lesions around the head of the bird, cellulitis in the abdominal region, hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, hemorrhagic intestine and pericarditis. Microscopical findings were most intense in liver and lung samples, presenting vascular and inflammatory alterations. Histopathological alterations indicated an acute presentation of the infections and several lesions in different organs, demonstrating the septicemic characteristic of the microorganisms involved in this case.Discussion: Both pathogens in this report were identified mostly in the same organs, which may indicate that there was an association in the pathogenesis. However, the entry routes of infection in this case may have been different, considering that Pseudomonas aeruginosa was not isolated from the intestine. The histopathological findings were not pathognomonic for either pathogen. However, some characteristic lesions were observed, such as cellulitis, which is commonly attributed to Escherichia coli. EAEC strains are human pathogens that cause acute and persistent diarrhea around the world. These microorganisms could be potentially transmitted to humans, as suggested by other studies with feral pigeons and enteric pathogens. However, the absence of reports of pigeon-transmitted diarrheagenic infections in humans may suggest that pigeons are only reservoirs of these pathogens. In addition, as this report demonstrates, these birds may also suffer from these infections. In conclusion, the free-living pigeon presented a natural occurring case of coinfection by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli. Both are human opportunistic pathogens, and may have public health implication

Thus, plants have been investigated in order to act as sources of fatty acids and assist in the supply of such demands. Objetivou-se verificar na comunidade universitária a existência de crendices e mitos, investigando suas origens, influências, adoção e credibilidade, correlacionando-os com o nível de conhecimento dos indivíduos. Pesquisa descritivo-analítica desenvolvida em Unidades de Ensino da Área de Saúde da Universidade Federal de Goiás. Seguiu-se a técnica de análise de conteúdo para análise dos dados. Foram criadas duas categorias: Atitudes Pessoais Relacionadas a Crenças e Influências e Superação das Crenças. Concluiu-se que há colisão entre os saberes popular e científico, gerando a exclusão do saber popular, sua manutenção “velada”, ou mesmo, a aliança dos saberes.Nowadays, myths and superstitions are present in spite of scientific and technological developments, especially when trying to solve problems that escape human understanding. This study was aimed at determining the existence of superstitions and myths in the university community, investigating their origins, influences, adoption and credibility, correlating them with people’s level of knowledge. It is a descriptive/analytical research conducted at Teaching Units in the Area of Health of the Federal University of Goiás. The technique of content analysis was utilized for data analysis. Two categories have been created: Personal Attitudes related to Superstitions and Influences and Destruction of Superstitions. It was found out that there is a clash between popular and scientific knowledge, either leading to the exclusion of popular wisdom, to its ‘veiled’ maintenance, or even to an alliance between the two types of knowledge.Mitos y creencias están presentes actualmente, a pesar del desarrollo de la ciencia y de la tecnología, principalmente en la búsqueda por soluciones de problemas que escapan al entendimiento humano. El estudio tuvo como objetivo verificar en la comunidad universitaria la existencia de creencias, mitos y otras prácticas populares, investigando sus orígenes, influencias, adopción, credibilidad y correlacionándolos con el nivel de conocimiento de los individuos. La investigación cuya naturaleza es descriptiva-analítica, fue desarrollada en Unidades de Enseñanza del Área de Salud de la Universidad Federal de Goiás. El grupo se constituye de profesores y estudiantes de los cursos del área de salud. Los resultados posibilitaron la creación de dos categorías, la primera, Actitudes personales relacionadas a Creencias, evidenció el poder de las prácticas populares y de las creencias sobre el comportamiento humano y la segunda, Influencias y Superación de las Creencias, permitió la comprensión del contento social y cultural del grupo investigado.     Ethanol extract of Cissampelos sympodialis ameliorates lung tissue damage in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

    Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic syndrome characterized by hyperglycemia. Chronic complications affect a number of organs, including the lungs. Cissampelos sympodialis Eichl (Menispermaceae) is a plant used to treat respiratory diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Cissampelos sympodialis extract (CSE) in lungs of diabetic rats. We used 30 Wistar rats divided into three groups: control group (CG), diabetic group (DG) and diabetic Cissampelos sympodialis treatment group (DTG). Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin (40 mg/kg i.v.). The CSE (400 mg/kg, po) was administered daily, during four weeks, beginning one week after the onset of DM. The treatment with CSE was not able to reduce blood glucose levels after streptozotocin injection. However, it was able to decrease cholesterol and triglycerides and prevent damage on pancreatic islets morphology. Additionally, morphological alterations such as alveolar septa loss, inflammatory infiltrate and fibrosis were seen in lung tissue of rats with DM, and treatment with CSE apparently reversed these histopathological findings. Thus, CSE treatment reduced the lipid profile and restored the lung architecture of diabetic animals by a mechanism independent of glycemia and which might be associated with the reduction of the damage on the pancreatic islets

    Mammals from the Base de Selva da Polícia Militar, Porto Velho, Rondônia, Brazil

    The state of Rondônia harbors 185 of the 399 species of mammals recorded from the Amazon biome, which corresponds to 46.4% of the total number of species. The state is also an important center of diversity and endemism, especially due to the presence of major biogeographical barriers such as the rio Madeira. We employed trap cameras and track surveys to assess the mammal community in the Base de Selva da Polícia Militar in Rondônia state, Brazil. During one year of survey, we recorded 40 species of medium-sized and large mammals, and, in our study, we recorded the highest mammal richness for a locality in Rondônia, which highlights the importance of private protected areas for mammal conservation in the state. Camera-trap records also showed the occurrence of threatened species. Finally, we provide recommendations for additional studies in this region that is threatened by deforestation and expansion of agriculture

    Hematological and immunological effects of stress of air traffic controllers in northeastern Brazil

    BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown that stress and emotional reactions can affect immune responses in animals and humans. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate hematological and immunological effects of stress on air traffic controllers. METHODS: Thirty air traffic controllers and 15 aeronautical information service operators were evaluated. The groups were divided as information service operators with 10 years or more of experience (AIS>10) and with less than 10 years in the profession (AIS<10) and air traffic controllers with 10 years or more of experience (ATCo>10) and with less than 10 years in the profession (ATCo<10). Blood samples were drawn at 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The paired t-test was used to compare monocyte and nitric oxide concentrations and ANOVA was used for the other parameters. RESULTS: The ATCo>10 group presented a significantly lower phagocytosis rate of monocytes at 2:00 p.m. compared to 8:00 a.m. Moreover, the ATCo>10 group presented lower hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, platelet and leukocyte levels, and increased cortisol concentrations at 8:00 a.m. compared to the other groups. Additionally, this group had lower phagocytosis rate of monocytes, and hemoglobin, platelet, leukocyte, basophils and nitric oxide levels at 2:00 p.m. compared to the other groups. CONCLUSION: Stress seems to greatly affect immune responses of air traffic controllers with more than ten years of experience

    Assessment of clinical characteristics and viral load in individuals infected by Delta and Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2

    In late 2021, a new variant of SARS-CoV-2 called Omicron emerged, replacing Delta worldwide. Although it has been associated with a lower risk of hospitalization and severe forms of COVID-19, there is little evidence of its relationship with specific symptoms and viral load. The aim of this study was to verify the relationship between Delta and Omicron variants of concern, viral load, and the occurrence of symptoms in individuals with COVID-19. Nasopharyngeal swab samples were collected and sequenced from patients with COVID-19 from the Northeast Region of Brazil between August 2021 and March 2022. The results showed a gradual replacement of the Delta variant by the Omicron variant during the study period. A total of 316 samples (157 Delta and 159 Omicron) were included. There was a higher prevalence of symptoms in Delta-infected individuals, such as coryza, olfactory and taste disturbances, headache, and myalgia. There was no association between viral load and the variants analyzed. The results reported here contribute to the understanding of the symptoms associated with the Delta and Omicron variants in individuals affected by COVID-19
